May 5, 2011 NOTE: THE JUNE DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO JUNE 9, 2011
We want to welcome to our Rockin' Bobbin group Marisa Castelan. Marisa is not new to the Buffalo ASG and has had some spectacular items to Buffalo's Show 'n' Tell. We certainly are pleased to have her join our neighborhood group.
This was a great meeting led by Marcy demonistrating "The Infamous Butterfly" digitizing with her Embird Software. This was excellent and I believed sparked a lot of interest in and calmed a lot of fears about digitizing. Although Embird is available on-line, there are other digitizing programs available. Marie Walters can help you purchase one from her shop and Marie's Sewing Center offers monthly classes on digitizing. Check her webpages.
The winner of the Turtle Contest with the Buffalo ASG - National ASG (Marcy said there are a lots and lots of turtles - I could not get out of her who was the winner) will be announced at the Annual ASG Picnic held at Faith Kelkenberg's Family Farm - remember to that picnic potluck the members with the last name starting with M to Z are to bring a dish to pass. The date is June 22 and the address is 9270 Wolcott Road Clarence Center, NY 14032. No sign up list is available - Just show up. At that Picnic - i believe one of Faith's grand-daughters will be demonstrating how to use Plastic Bags for sewing your special projects.
We have chosen Black Dog, Second Chance as our next recipient of a community service project - Hugs for Homeless Animals Snuggle Blankets. We will be making blankets of all sizes to fit small dogs and cats all the way up to the biggest dogs (and cats). A mere suggestion of sizes is - but certainly not limited to - 14" x 14" - 24" x 24" - 36" X 36" - 45" X 45" - This project is not so specific. You may use whatever fabric you want - with suggestions to cotton, flannel, fleece - sew, knit or crochet. These items, of course because of their nature, will be washed frequently. If you do tie off - please remember puppies are puppies and they chew - so double or triple tie to prevent unraveling, washing and wearing. Don't get too fancy because that dog does not know fancy.
The blankets will be distributed to Black Dog, Second Chance who takes all color dogs and cats as well as all sizes. They are local and are a No-Kill Rescue Shelter. They find good, healthy and happy families for their dogs and cats and work closely with local pet shops/stores in their distribution of rescues. The ladies I have been in correspondence with are very grateful for our efforts and look forward to our gift to them - which will be around Christmas time. I have been specifically working with Cathy Drdul.
Bring 'n' Brag
Donna K - Brought in Fat Cat Patterns by Sindy Rodenmyer to share with the group. Please visit Sindy's site http://www.fatcatpatterns.com for more information. Donna also had a super cute Lamb Pincushion and the middle to her Christmas Panel quilt - we will be seeing more of this cutie. BUT - what her spectacular item was her Harley Tee Shirt Quilt. It is beautiful - and what a special item it certainly is.
Bea - Brought in her Tropical Purples and Greens Large Quilt Top. These colors are wonderful and this also was a beautiful quilt top.
Laurie - Brought in the purses and bags she did from the purse class that I missed with Chris Jehle from the Rochester Chapter. The one I love the best is the Jenna - but Laurie had a few from Kits that Chris had to offer. She also made a Kitty Pillow using items from her stash - all in an effort of "going green". Most of Chris' patterns I believe are from http://www.sewphisti-cat.com - and Chris makes up pre-cut kits.
Margaret - She has been working with Digi-Stitches www.digistitches.com - and has made some wonderful square and round bags.
Kathy D - Our Hero - brought in delicious cookies!!!! She also ask the group about a problem she is having with a quilted wall hanging that she made using photo fabric. It seems to be fading over time and asked for suggestions and help. And then to top it off, she had two rugs made out of old tee-shirts - these were not only beautiful but wonderful and completely washable. She must show us how to do this project.
Mary Lou - Well she shopped-hopped all day
Marcy - Thank you so much for your expert demo on digitizing. Marcy also brought in a bag from the purse class of Chris Jehle. Another beauty.
Linda B - Well - she has been gardening and gardening in her spare time.
Jean - Well - she has also been very busy with things other than sewing this month.
Kathy T - Another Great Bag from Chris' class - You ladies all did a great job on these purses - makes me jeleous I could not attend.
Pam - Her purse was also wonderful. They were all different...
Linda L - A blue and orange Runaround bag from Lazy Girls. Linda made 4 and gave 3 away to friends who were traveling to Vegas. Also there was a screen bag in bright colors as well as a new pair of jeans with red lace down the sides and around the cuffs. The tatted lace is a pattern from www.murphysdesigns.com This site has lovely lace and it is so easy to make. Linda also brought in the address for a free watermellon applique or machine embroidery from http://www.thediydish.com This site is a free blog site and is a wonderful addition to your blog updates.

April 7, 2011 Meeting Notes
Welcome to our newest member - Donna Kathke. Donna comes with a wealth of quilting experience and is very interested in Machine Embroidery.
Our discussion and demo was a great job done by Laurie. Laurie told us how she does a perfect placement and handed out and industry chart for perfect placements on a multifute of items, clothing and accessories. There was a discussion from the ladies present and their experiences with placement. Thank you Laurie - Great Job.
I am so proud of you girls - our small group collected 34 painted turtles for the ASG project. Thank you to all who contributed. Did we win? I don't know - but we certainly gave it our all.
Next ASG on line will be April 26th. You may register now at http://www.asg.org - its free and they now have a lot of free webinar classes.
A suggestion was made that our next community service project be for the Snuggles Project for animal shelters. I am checking into this project and will report back in May. Thank you Kathy for this great suggestion.
We are changing the June meeting to the second Thursday - June 9th.
Jean handed out Buffalo Stitches newsletter to those who did not receive their's via email. Email addresses were collected so be checked by ASG, Chapter and our Neighborhood Group. The new Notions Magazine came out via email - so if you email address was incorrect - you probably did not receive it...let me or Marcy know.
A reminder was made to all of the Purse Workshop on April 16. Still room for reservations.
Bring 'n' Brag...
Marcy - Not to be an over-achiever - but she has made and brought with her 3 Tee-Shirt quilts - all different and all wonderful. She also made bags to go with each of the quilt gifts.
Jean - Baby Quilt As You Go - from Fast and Furious. She also completed and wore her reverse applique jacket - it is really lovely.
Marie was not there - but Linda showed her Items for Jessica's Wedding Shower. Most of the items were things Jessica had started and were just UFO's when she left to go to school and to the west coast. So as a gift - Marie completed each of them for her. What a great idea that was - and how beautiful each item turned out. Marie also made a note book favor for the shower - a pattern from Moose B Stitchin and two table runners.
Linda B - What a beautiful jacket dones wih Twin Needles.
Paula had questions pertaining First Communion fabric. It was suggested that she contact Riverside or Patricia's to help solve her problem.
Donna K - had a beautiful Japanese Oragami wall hanging. Its all in the fold - and she will be teaching this technique at a future meeting. She also had a beautiful Wall Hanging Quilt that she won first place with as well as an "inchy quilt" where the well embelished squares were only an inch in size. She had a wall hanging of an Ava-CAT-o (so cute). Her black, white and red winter scene was beautiful!!! Just shows what can be done with black and white and a pop of color!!! Welcome to the group Donna.
Kathy - Little cookie bags for Easter!!! How cute were these!! She got patterns from Embroidery Library of Easter type scenes and embroidered to each home sewn bag.
Pam - Twisted Sisters Rotary Template and Gift Wrap Just for Fun. I am amazed at the things you ladies are doing.
Mary Lou - She really is our purse lady - this was from a purse class called Totes on Bolts. She also had a darling Paper Doll Quilt.
Laurie - Has found that she has good luck ordering patterns from McCalls for $4
Donna S - Adorable pet screen bags. She get's her screen by the foot from Spaulding's Hardware. It is treated just like sewing on fabric. I just bought some from Home Depot - so you can compare quality and prices if you wish. A great idea Donna had for the floors of her bags was left over floor tiles...who would have thought???
Joan - Pockets in the Hoop - from Thread of Time Digi Stitches.
Margaret - Wore her reversed appliqued jacket - What a wonderful color.
Linda L - Towels made for a gift, Stars for a quilt project by Moda, Table Runner.
Hospice sent us a thank you note for 20 Walker Caddies. These were lovely and no real duplicates. Janet - The lady I dropped the caddies to - was extremely happy that we were able to give such a generous gift. So - Thank you ladies - Job Very Well Done. Now we will concentrate on the Turtles - remember to keep track of your hours as they are submitted to the ASG. A reminder that Marcy has a challenge to all the Neighborhood Groups. The one that collects (by percentage) the most Turtle Pillows will be treated to a treat from Butterwood. So please keep working on your Painted Turtles for the Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Camps. Collection of our turtles will be at our April meeting. If you need a pattern please contact Linda Lee
Next Buffalo ASG meeting is: January 26, 2011 – The evening's topic will be Zippers - taking the mystery out of inserting zippers by Kathy Reitz. This should be a very informative topic. Please continue to help another thread pusher, a younger sewer, or even yourself to take a class, trunk show, seminar anything to keep the creative juices flowing. Marie has some interesting classes coming up - keep checking her website. www.mariessewingcenter.com
With this being winter please refer to the Meeting Schedule page for all upcoming dates and what we will be doing that evening. Its all subject to change at any time - so keep looking. If we are going to be closed because of the weather - I will post it as soon as I know. You can always call me at 998-0880.
Demo - Discussion for the evening - Embroidery Designs, Where to Get Them and What To Do With Them Once You Have Them... was led by a Power Point presentation by Linda Lee (myself). I did not feel this accomplished what I set out to accomplish. We had our computers, but it probably would have been better to actually purchase a design, download it and go from there. I am writing up more definitive instructions in hopes that it will give you a better helping hand. I do thank Marie and Don for getting us all set up in such a timely manner - and I do feel that something was learned. The problem is we all have different equipment, computers, softwares etc... The last question asked was "Where do YOU want to go from here?" Some people were lost and others had no comment...so we really went nowhere.
Please look under the page (in the left side bar) Designs - Purchase - File - Use. I will have this page up and running by January 20th. And please ASK QUESTIONS - don't be afraid, we all have questions and we certainly all had the same questions as you at one time or another.
I will gladly work with anyone one-on-one to help get you to where you want to be with your designs and the filing of them. Just give me a call 433-4374 or 998-0880.
Bring 'n' Brag was a great time.
Pam shared information she had from the Lockport Public Library on free computer classes that will be offered this winter and spring. This may be a good refresher for many of us.
Laurie - Well - it was all "Robert" - her newest computer wallpaper.
Bea - A beautiful vintage looking quilt for her oldest grand-daughter. She is going to put a vintage rose pattern on the backside of this lovely quilt. On a sidebar here - Thank You to Bea for telling us about http://tutorials.missouriquiltco.com/ and Linda Blyth for telling us to click on Project Tutorials. There are some great videos there.
Marie - Wore her wonderful Borders Made Easy type sweatshirt jacket which was very much embellished with machine embroidery. She also talked about the "Hoop Sister's In-The-Hoop Quilt". Your first square will be one-on-one with Marie. This is a beautiful quilt in peachy colors. Also a work in progress in the Navity Block of the Month Quilt. That is done the 2nd Saturday at 9:00 at Maries and teaches many kinds of stitches and techniques. Also will be the Wild Flower Rapsody. The Artistic Sewing Suite for cutwork embroidery has come in. Marie will be taking classes on this software and keep us informed. Also, please keep your prayers with Marie's father who is undergoing some serious medical issues and surgery.
Doris - Made a huge hoop holder for all her embroidery hoops. White with embroidered red dragonfly from The Embroidery Library. Doris also brought in one of those purses with the forks and spoons as handles - made from a placemat. What a clever idea. Wish I had thought of it.
Jo - Welcome to the group!!!
Mary Lou - Is working on a purse. She is a great purse creater - we'll see it at the next meeting.
Linda B. - Finished some mylar ornaments with just the cheap mylar from the $ store. They looked amazing and you would never know the difference in the materials!!! Great job Linda.
Paula - An absolutely wonderful Paper Pieced Advent Calendar wall hanging. There was so much work put into this and believe me it really showed. Paula has been working with the Strip Tube Patterns quilt. So well done!!!
Be sure to visit the January 2011 Photos pages to see some of the items that were shown at the meeting. I phots will be exchanged for the next months photos when the site is updated. So if you want to capture them - right click on the photo and "save photo as". ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ December 9, 2010 Meeting Notes
20 Walker Caddies (with a recorded hourse of 34) have been collected and drop off to Hospice on Sunset Drive in Lockport. They will be so appreciated by Hospice and their residents. These are sure to make for a Happy Christmas. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY AND LOVELY HOSPICE WALKER CADDIES - COLLECTION WILL CONTINUE UNTIL WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 15. Drop them at my house or at Marie's. I will pick them up from Marie on that date about 4:00. If you drop them at Linda Lee's house and she is not home, just put them in the mail box or between the doors on the stoop.
Demo: Linda Lee did a short demo on Mylar Embroidery®, a registered Trademark and Wordmark registered to Patricia Gates of Purely Gates Embroidery ( http://purelygates.com ). The term that should be used by, we, the public, in searching or using what we call Mylar should be polypropylene film. It was suggested to only use designs that are digitized for that purpose for "best" results. Also the suggestion in the industry is to use film created for film embroidery because it is washable and low temp drying. Suggested source for film is http://www.heirloomsbysharon.com. But as the stitched out designs show - depending on the density of the design, wrapping papers and the such can be used at your own risk. The notes that were used for this presentation have their own link on the left column of this page (click Film Embroidery - last item in the column). The examples were a snowman, an angel and a rose.
This was our Christmas Dinner Meeting and the food was great - and plenty of it. Thank you to everyone for bringing such great dishes.
Remember to keep your ASG membership up-to-date. If you have not renewed, please do it now.
Next Buffalo ASG meeting is: January 26, 2011 – The evening's topic will be Zippers - taking the mystery out of inserting zippers by Kathy Reitz. This should be a very informative topic. A reminder that Marcy has a challenge to all the Neighborhood Groups. The one that collects (by percentage) the most Turtle Pillows will be treated to a treat from Butterwood. Happy Birthday's to Marie and to Linda Blyth.
Demo: Marie Walters did a demo/discussion this evening on Templates, Rulers and Rotary Cutters. A good refresher on how to properly measure and cut your fabric. A great show of the newest and best rulers and templates - the proper tool for the exact job results. Pros and cons on various product manufacturers including cutting mats. This was a very informative meeting...Thank you Marie.
The Fall 2010 American Sewing Guild Notions Magazine has been received by all paid ASG members and YES - it has a lot on Embroidery.
Next Buffalo ASG meeting is: November 17, 2010 – This meeting will be their Pot Luck Dinner and Elections. The Buffalo ASG (which is what we as a group belong to) (Marcy inparticular) is challenging the Buffalo Groups as to the most participation per group - with a surprise ending!!! The need is for the Painted Turtle Pillows which is our National Project 2011. You can read all about the Painted Turtle Pillows and this project in the Buffalo Stitches Newsletter and in Notions - the National ASG Publication. As was stated in the last ASG online meeting, they give away 2000 to 2500 per month to the ill children attending the Paul Newman Painted Turtle Camps. That is a lot of sick children - and a lot of pillows.
With the holiday season upon us, please continue to help another thread pusher, a younger sewer, or even yourself to take a class, trunk show, seminar anything to keep the creative juices flowing. Marie has some interesting classes announced in her Newsletter.
ASG on line for November has not yet been announced. Notification will be sent by email as soon as we know what it is.
Please refer to the 2009-2010 Meeting Schedule page for all upcoming dates and what we will be doing that evening. Its all subject to change at any time - so keep looking.
Again, it was discussed that one of the great things about the last Shop Hop was that each of the stores did a demo...it is always good to see a demo on how to use something or even what is new on the market. Keep a watch for good shop hops.
It was discussed slightly and agreed not to obtain a speaker (Dorothy Julius) on pressed flowers because it really has nothing to do with sewing of any type. We have been given $50 to use for anything - but I would like to get a good speaker / demo person to do something as it pertains to our group. Any suggestions, please let Linda Lee know. Along that same line, Linda Lee attended an on-line meeting with Ramona on what people would like to see on her future ASG on-line meetings. Its a long list - but if you have any suggestions for her or even for our group - please let Linda Lee know.
Bring 'n' Brag and Christmas gift items:
Margaret - She has been busy - Her Walker Bag is done and very nice as well as knitted booties and she has a Turtle.
Linda Blyth also has a Turtle and cute pillow from a free CME pattern. These are lovely and would make great gifts.
Pam had the binding strips used for the Demo (she is doing a beautiful table runner) as well as a Winter Quilt and a Tan(s) Crochet Afghan.
Laurie is making a black cable knit scarf with a free Lion's Brand Pattern.
Jean also did a table runner in green. She had a beautiful Judy Fenton (Half) Log Cabin Jacket. Jean is so good with Jackets.
Mary Lou finished her Quillo in beautiful mauve colors. What a great design and gift idea
Linda Lee has been busy too - A Maison Purse with and extra reversible cover and 2 sets of hand made buttons. Owl felt barrett holder with 5 sets of clip covers. Pot holders and 3 cosmetic bags with clear fronts.
I have added a new item to the left side-bar to put into into that pops up in-between meetings. So check it often.
WEAR A HAT NIGHT - this was fun and something different to do...Thanks ladies for participating. What should out next special night be called...
Welcome to our newest member: Mary Lou Nelson of Lockport. Hope you enjoyed the meeting. First meetings are a little overwhelming - but this group has so much to offer you and we know you are an asset to us as well.
Demo: Marie Walters did a demo/discussion this evening on 3D Applique. Webster defines "applique" as a decoration cut out and fastened to a larger piece of material". Of course, we sewers/crafter have extended that definition to anything attached to a larger piece of material. Marie used Poly Mesh as a stabilizer and Mettler Polysheen Thread to create 2 butterflies to be put together that could be attached to whatever you want and looks like it just landed. She trimmed the mesh close to the butterfly and using a Stencil Burning Tool (hot and with a very thin tip) burned (or melted) the stabilzer closer to the butterfly to give it dimension, form and much more detail. When that is you can add whatever to attach it what whatever you want - like a patch, broach, whatever. This would be a very fun experiment for all to try. Once you do - you will put your applique on everything. Great for those hard to embroidery on spots!!! You may order a stencil through Marie (remember 20% discount on Guild Night Only). A site on this subject to visit is: http://www.pams3ddesigns.net/ This site has been featured in a few of the embroidery magazines. I don't know if there are free designs on this site - but the prices are very reasonable.
Next Buffalo ASG meeting is: OCTOBER 27, 2010 – Deborah Naybor is the guest speaker – Deborah Naybor operates a land survey company out of Alden, NY but her humanitarian efforts regularly take her thousands of miles away. She has been named one of the top 5 women business owners in America. Debbie will be going to India in December and helping 50 teenage widows learn sewing skills so that they might make a living. In their country they are not allowed to go back to their own families. These items are precious to them and as “sewing sisters” we can make a difference through Debbie. The price of “admission” to this chapter meeting on October 27th is a spool of thread, or a package of needles.
A continued reminder of the Rockin' Bobbins Community Service Project - A walker caddy to be donated at Christmas Time to Hospice. You may also make a lap blanket if you wish at least 34 x 43 - but caddys are what they really need at this time. Free patterns are located at .......

Marcy's Friend's son has returned home - so her project has come to an end. But you may still donate to other's who are overseas defending us and she will see that the right organization or Troops get it. Even though National Sewing Month has come to an end - please continue to help another thread pusher, a younger sewer, or even yourself to take a class, trunk show, seminar anything to keep the creative juices flowing.
ASG on line with be October 12, 2010 at 5:00 EASTERN. This is a time change for this month so be aware of that. This month's demo will be on Fibre Arts.
Please refer to the 2009-2010 Meeting Schedule page for all upcoming dates and what we will be doing that evening. Its all subject to change at any time - so keep looking.
It was discussed that one of the great things about the last Shop Hop was that each of the stores did a demo...it is always good to see a demo on how to use something or even what is new on the market. Keep a watch for good shop hops.
Great Tip from Pam - kind of a reminder: Read your instructions - at least twice and then measure twice and cut once. Hmmmm - I think she learned that the hard way.
Remember ladies - Always stitch your new designs out first before placing on your precious item. Even the ones you pay a lot for. You do not know the extent of the seller's digitizing skills. Better to know what the flaws are before!!!
Bring and Brag:
Linda Blyth - What can I say - She made a couple of sweatshirts for her husband with his cars on them!!! How wonderful is that - OH BUT WAIT - she made for herself a wonderful shirt she saw from the L.L. Bean Catalog Page 14 of the Woman's catalog Woven Trim Tee - Pintucking down the front as well as buttons - Linda - your's looks better than the catalog and your fabric choice is great. I wish I could look at something and make it!!!! Linda also wore a hat that spoke of her love for gardening and the great outdoors.
Jean - Cutest astronomical glow in the dark quilt top - what a great idea and a wonderful job in constructing. Jean also wore a purple felted hat she made a long time ago and it was just beautiful.
Pam - A lovely quilt top (and I am sorry I did not get the name) - very nicely done and great patterning. She also had a very cute Halloween Hanging. Pam wore a pink hat! Pink is a great color for her.
Mary Lou - Wore the cutest Minny Mouse Ears in rememberance of a trip she had taken.
Marcy - Usually doing Fashion, Marcy is now doing Quilting!!!! I was told that one the quilting bug gets you it doesn't go away. She is doing an In-The-Hoop Quilt by Hoopsisters. www.hoopsisters.com These are expensive patterns - but I got to tell you they are beautiful when done. Marcy used her EQ7 to set her color pallet and proper placings. Great job so far Marcy - and thank you for the tips you noted when working on the project so far. Her notebook was well kept on this project and something we should all think about for our projects.
Laurie - Wore a Safari type hat - Fresh from the closet!!! Looked so cute on her. Sher don't know where it came from, but it was fun.
Margaret - Wore her Lucky Shamrock hat - all glitzed up - That was adorable.
Linda Lee - Had a hat for each job - The corvette/boat hat has been all over, blown our of the corvette and chased after as well as blown out of the boat and into the water - but it survived!!! The Tiger print hat and the baseball Coach Granny Cap were both used for coaching the Challenger Baseball team - and the Kabuta hat - well let's just say it was a gift in hoping I would wear it to cut the lawn - YAH - that is not going to happen soon!!!!
Marie - The newest edition of 5-10-15+Fat Quarters. Book was a great hit with the ladies because of its great looking patterns.

An Organizer for Back of Seat that looked so professional that you would have thought it was commercially made...Celtin Knots wall hanging...Picnic throw that is fruits and veggies (What a great idea)...a Pumpkin wall hanging and a Hot Air Baloon wall hanging...Each of these were very professional looking - What a wonderful job.
Jean - The Painted Turtle for the Paul Newman Hole in the Wall Gang Community Service Project. How cute this was.
Marcy - A beautiful Jacket she had made with many fall type colors. Very colorful and so nicely fitted. Once again a beautiful job.
Linda Blyth - A sweatshirt that she will be teaching in the "near" future. It is a cable applique sweatshirt - reverse applique. The sleeves make it stand out and are worthy of the runway. I cannot wait to take this class!!! Great job Linda - keep us posted on when the class will be taught.
Linda Lee - The Maison Bag. This bag has a reversible shell and her buttons were pant waist expanders and a covered button to match each of the fabrics used...so when the reversible side is used the buttons will match - and other shells can be made out of different fabric and use different buttons.
This was a fun end of the year meeting including our annual indoor picnic.
We had a lot of great discussions as well as the most wonderful food.
Thank you everyone for a great 2009-2010 session. See You in September!!!!

May 6 Meeting Note
We had a great group with discussions on Aprons and an Apron presentation by Linda Lee. It was very interesting to hear how "their" aprons came to be...a mistake on a project to finding just the fabric to make an apron... Lots of Fun

April 8, 2010
Next Meeting is May 6, 2010 at Marie’s Sewing enter at 6:00 pm – Topic Aprons – Presentation by Linda Lee – Wear your apron (or borrow one) and just tell a short story that goes with it….
Next Buffalo ASG meeting is April 28 at 205 Longmeadow Road (St. Peter’s Church), Eggertsville (between Niagara Falls Blvd. and Millersport Highway) – Topic is a demo by Helen Grabowski on bound buttonholes.
Reminder of the River Lea Quilt Show April 30 and May 1 and also the Amherst Museum Quilt Guild’s A Sea of Quilts April 23 through April 25… Also a reminder of Runwaypresented by Buffalo State College Fashion Department. Please check out your Buffalo Stitches Newsletter for all the details. http://www.asg.org/members/scripts/newsupload/newsletters/Buffalo_Buffalo_Stitches.pdf
The next webinar for the ASG is on Tuesday, April 20 – please go the www.embroidery.com to register free for this webinar. There is no need to buy any of the extra stuff that may put before you while registering. While at the site – view the last meeting which was on “Sewing Tips” – there were some really great one – and some obvious ones.I would like to bring to your attention one of them, which was to place door stop under your machine to give it lift – DO NOT DO THIS WITH YOUR EMBROIDERY MACHINE….it needs to be level.
This was a great meeting with a lot of discussion.Linda Blyth has found a way to decrease the density of embroidery.Bring the design up in your digitizer, make it smaller (notice the stitch numbers reduce) and then send it to your machine. In the machine increase the size. And that is all it does – it increases the size, but does not increase the number of stitches.Try it and see how it works for you.
Linda Blyth also gave a thorough discussion, handouts, actual samples and demo on Cutwork Embroidery. This was an excellent refresher to some, but a more than wonderful topic for those who had never done it but certainly want to.One big point Linda made was if you sometimes cut out the original tack down post, it may be easier to trim the fabric you need to trim out….but be careful of just what you are cutting. She had a black shawl sample that was absolutely beautiful (Jenny Haskins pattern) (Demo was Sue Box Designs).Great job Linda.
Laurie has a question on the quilting of her wall hanging Lost Mittens Quilt. It was a beauty and the group came up with many ideas for how to quilt it off.
Marybeth wanted to know about Floriani Template Tearaway.Marie gave a demo on this item as well as a refresher demo on the use of the clothsetter. This is a printable, translucent, self-adhesive template paper, Floriani Template Tearaway allows you to preview placement on the background fabric and use the template gridlines to position the needle for an exact result every time. There is a tutorial at this site on the Template Tearawayhttp://www.rnkdistributing.com/pid-192-54/Template_Tearaway_Tutorial.htmlBut don’t forget to make it work its best – use your clothsetter.
Marcy is creating a package for her friend's son who was just deployed to Afghanistan – She wants to make a really nice and full package for him. Please bring items to put into his package - hygiene products, candies that don't melt, even pillowcases or PJ’s - think about ideas and bring something to the May 6 meeting! Marcy will really appreciate this as will one of her best friends.
There are a lot of Shop Hops coming up – April - May and June. There are a lot of shops involved and a lot a great prizes to be given away.If you did not get a flyer, pick one up at Marie’s or any of the shops.
We had a really great Bring ‘n’ Brag session:
Laurie – Her beautiful Lost Mittens Quilt and she told us she has made bib(s) for Cameron – She loves it!
Jan – Two really great wall hangings – Spring with wonderful pussy willows and a strawberry one.As you might guess – both were fabulously done.
MaryBeth – Her Echo finished Quilted Door Hanging and a beautiful handbag embroidered and stitched. This was a Tammy Add Designs.
Marie – Her 8th pair of boxers for Christopher (who has been loosing weight – so these may now be too big for him). She also had 2 different sizes of Double Diamond Rulers with a sample finished product. She pointed out there could be many useful projects for this ruler. They are in stock now.
Pam – Just finished the quilting on her Rose Quilt (I believe for son-in-law)..This is absolutely beautiful. She also had photos of her grandson – but we were so busy we did not get to see them – HOPE SHE BRINGS THEM NEXT MONTH.
Linda Blyth – Cutworks she had completed…
Marcy – Cutwork she had completed and a Peggy Sagers Sweater Pattern (which she, of course, customized for herself). This was absolutely gorgeous.
Jean has been preparing for the Grand Island Quilt Show – see above River Lea….

14. Linda Blyth showed us the effect and affect of embroidery with the twin needle. Linda also handed out directions and tips for Twin Needle Embroidery. See Tips and Tricks Page.
Bring 'n' Brag was great - Some of the items were: Jan: Hot Pad which she hand appliqued, Monthly Hanging (Bunny) beautifully done and wonderful towels Ann: Showed the previous Monthly Hangings done by Jan Jean: Candace's Baby Quilt - with freemotion stippling. This quilt will be in the May 1st Riverly Quilt Show at Whitehaven Church on Grand Island. Pam: She finished her quilt and helped her friend to do a quilt for Desale's Fundraiser. Bea: These were great - two fleece blankies with crocheted edging. The holes for the crochet were done with "Skip Stitch" a cutter that spaces the holes equally. One was 1/2 yd the other 1 yd of fleece. Laurie: Finished squares for Buffalo ASG and showed her notebook - to which she was later able to pull right out a past meeting technique...way to go Laurie!!!! Joan: Finished a 5 year project of a lovely red gingham diaper bag which converts to a changing pad. This was beautiful. Joan also had a table runner or wall hanging that used the wave feature on the BabyLock Serger. Marcy: This talented lady showed the photos of her curtins and chair coverings. To be so talented! Marcy also brought in her Malika Mums bag that is part of a fundraiser for the Mothers of Disabled Children in Kenya. The story goes: "Shunned by Kenyan society, these mothers were unable to earn a living to provide for their special needs children until they were taught to sew. ASG is proud to offer these heavy-duty quality canvas tote bags that enable Malika Mums to provide for their families – it’s our “sewing as a life skill” mission statement in action! Featuring the ASG logo on one side and “this is not a plastic bag” in Swahili on the other"
Paula: What a lovely snow flake jacket - she had a question as to how to keep the loops together - the ladies all agreed "Fray Check" was the answer.... Mary Beth: Finished her sister's quilt and had her Bunny Quilt. She also had her Snap Sack cupcake which she echoed around the cupcakes. What great works from this gal!!!! Linda B: Every loved this Bring Everything Tote - Big enough for all your quilting needs and supplies. One belonged to Kathy DeMarco, but Linda's was done in Black and white with more pockets than you can imagine and when undone layed flat. I believe she will be doing a class on this in the spring. She also had cross stiched huck towels (she got the pattern so long ago she does not remember from where), a cable front sweatshirt jacket and a bib. Wonderful work. Marie: As busy as she has been - she completed 5 new boxer shorts for her son....she will release a new newsletter in April for the shop and has a couple of great machines at the shop 3160 QDC and a AQS2009. Stop in to see they great machines.
...................................... February 4, 2010 February is National Embroidery Month - What Embroidery Projects Have You Done???
Note to Janome owners. Have you wondered what the difference between .jef and .jef+ is - well here is an answer from "Ask Jan" on the Janome website. ".jef format design file limitations is the B hoop (5.5 x 7.75) and 64,000 stitches.... .jef+ format design file limitations is the SQ hoop (7.75 x 7.75) and 100,000 stitches. So watch when you are ordering your designs - because a 100,000 size file will not stitch out on any machine lower than the Janome 11000.
My challenge for March's meeting is to think out of the box.....
1. Thank you to Marie for donating fabric and Linda Blyth for fabric and batting to the ASG friendship quilt. Kits were handed out for people to finish by the next meeting. Also along this same subject line - Linda B. showed the layout of the blocks and was there for anyone who needed help to be shown what to do. I am proud of all of you who took kits to help the Buffalo Group out. Linda Yovanof of the Buffalo Stitches may have agreed to be heading up the quilt project for the year 2010.
2. Discussion was on the first ever National ASG Webinar. I attended this webinar and found it to be most useful as well as very informative. They are just getting organized and will be using the Webinars as a tool and type of Neighborhood Group Meeting. It was based out of Arizona, but participation was from all over the country. You could even put your item up on your desktop and everyone could view it...so they will have a show and tell segment as they proceed. This first meeting was actually a PowerPoint presentation introducing the new concepts and platforms. In the future (and there was some at this meeting) members will be able to participate in real time with their own computer microphone and a question box. Please watch your emails for the next meeting from the ASG...it is beneficial to everyone - not just leaders or Chapter members.
3. On this same type of subject, Linda Lee told about the webinars and e-classed she has been taking for free on line and encourages everyone this next month to try them out. Embroidery.com has a couple of great ones coming up. Just go to Embroidery.com and register for free. The next two are "Thread Essentials" and "Stabilizer Essdentials". Bernina.com also offers specialized webinars - and even though they may deal with "Bernina" the subjects and their line of thinking apply to all of our embroidery machines. Give them a try - they are free and cannot hurt - and report back to our group in March on what you have see. Also keep in mind that Youtube.com has free videos on almost any question you may have. For example, I just bought a felting machine and there are a number of great videos on felting and machine felting.
4. Emilee Kiss has won the National "Make It Yourself With Wool" contest. She will receive a $1500 scholarship along with other benefits. Remember - Emilee is Fay Kelkenberg's granddaughter...we can only look for a great future for Emilee.
5. DUES to the National ASG are going up from $35 to $45...BUT THE GOOD NEW IS, you can lock in the $35.00 dues for the next 3 years if you renew before May 1, 2010. For those of you who just renewed and did not know of this - please call headquarters and see if they can fix this for you. That's like almost getting a year free. 713-729-3000 or email [email protected] ..but I suggest calling and getting a real person on the line.
6. Carol Rice Rafferty will be the guest speaker at the Buffalo ASG February meeting. Carol is a Fiber Artist. Please go to her webpages http://carolannricerafferty.com and check out her work. She is a very interesting person and it would be worth your trip. During that same meeting will be "notions" as part of the show and tell.
7. If you are not receiving your newsletter from the Buffalo Stitches - remember as a member you can log on the www.ask.org and find it under chapter newsletters - or contact Jean Brighton to be placed on the email listing. [email protected]
8. Marie did a great demo on machine fiber art using regular knitting yarn. She discussed the proper stabilizer to use (in this subject she used Floriana Wet and Stick - nice and firm - great tear-a-way), the actual foot that is used and how it holds the yarn to the right tension, the actual brush if you so choose to use it (we did not for this demo), types of threads and yarns used for "brushing out" stitched designs and built in designs in the Janome 11000. She offered up at a great price on Janome Brush-out Embroidery Collection of Designs and also specialized threads to be used on certain projects. And, of course, this procedure can used on no matter which brand of machine you have - just think a little out of the box.
9. Bring 'n' Brag showed off a great number of items...Marie had made a bib for an "Over The Hill" party...Marcy Workman had a beautifully felted purse she picked up at a craft show, as well as a wonderful jacket (pattern at http://www.marcytilton.com ) she had made and felted in my favorite color green - just beautiful....Linda Blyth will be teaching a Cable Appliqued Sweatshirt at a date TBD, she also had a different town purse than last month - just as beautiful though...Jan had a http://moosebstitchin.net/ clear cosmetic (or whatever) case and Wonderful 3 Blocks of the Month wall hangings one more beautiful than the other. Then if those weren't enough - she had a catch all basket that she had hand painted the lid - what a true artist she is. Jean gave us an very wonderful insite of the "Extreme Home Makeover" - the photos were grand and her telling us the inside stories was great. We are proud of you Jean for your volunteer work on this project.
10. Just a reminder that the ASG and Embroidery.com have a free pattern to ASG members who want to make a quilt, throw, pillow - whatever - for the Haiti Relief Poject. Please visit their websites if you wish to be a part of this project.
11. Linda Blyth will do a demo in March on Twin Needle Embroidery - When to use it, How to Use It and what to look for when you are looking for patterns.
12. Is there a function with your machine that you would like to discuss or see how it is actually used??? Let us know. ......................................... January 7, 2010 Excellent beginning discussion on new stabilizers - what, when, where and how to use them. Various people told Marie what they are looking for to be discussed at the next meeting and visually saw how Floriani's Wash Away and Mesh were used.
The ASG Convention will be held in Atlanta this year August 3-8, 2010. Being it is on the East Coast area, it is hoped that many of us who did not get to go to the Western ones will be able to attend this one. There are people who are willing to share a room to cut cost. Please contact any of the ASG Buffalo Board Members for more information on their travel arrangements and the ASG.org web site for more information on the convention.
The Buffalo ASG has a couple of interesting meetings on the agenda - January will be on Zippers and February will be on Notions. Please view their website for more information. the link is under Favorite Links on this page.
Our February meeting will pick up where we left off on new stabilizers and machine couching and yarn designs.
Lap quilts are needed for our local Hospis - contact Pam if you are interested.
The Buffalo ASG is in need of people to help with quilt squares for our ill members. So these stay right within our own group members. Marie has generously offered to donate fabric and the use of her classroom to let a committee cut and prepare kits for this project. There have been quite a few illness this past year - so there is a need to build back up the quilt squares. Marcy will take this info to the Buffalo ASG and get back to us on a time and the numbers of pople willing to work on this project. The pattern has been on the Buffalo ASG webpage and in many emails - so if you are interest - please come help to build the squares back up. Linda Blyth has volunteered to show those who need help how to put the squares together.
Upcoming classes at Maries will be: Irish Chain Quilt - January 18, 2010 10am to 3pm Linda Blyth with be teaching the techniques on the Federation Quilt - date TBD Linda Blyth will also be teaching the Hoop Carry Case - date TBD Marie's Sewing Center will be having an Anniversary Week with demos and classes - the date TBD I was Not Available for November or December's Meetings - Thus no Notes

October 1, 2009 - First Meeting of the 2009-2010 Sessions ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you to all our new members and visitors. It was great to see you at the meetings and hope you got a lot out of it and will return next month.
Thank you to Marie who did a full demo for the evening on Embroidered Postcards - In-the-Hoop - A product of Hoop Sisters. Marie showed exactly how the postcards are built with stabilizers and fabric and told of the importance of following the directions as given. The directions are quite long, but as Marie pointed out, about half of them are just "X Marks The Spot" and you just do your alignment at this point. The Postcard CD package was passed around for viewing of directions only. The cost of this fine product is $36 and is now available at Marie's Sewing Center - no shipping fee when purchased from Marie.
Marie also spoke briefly on another product by Hoop Sisters - Double Wedding Ring Quilt all done In The Hoop. Marie also has this pattern availabe at the store and hopes to run a class or demo on it in the late fall or early winter months. If you want to read on both of these products before your purchase please visit www.hoopsisters.com
Linda Lee gave a brief demo/lecture on Embroidery Greeting Cards on card stock, how to prepare the card and stabilizer for stitching. She also showed Embroidered cards built with stitching on fabric and another hand embroidered and emblished. Linda told of the importance of choosing a pattern that has longer stitches and fewer stitches than normal cloth embroidery...too many needle marks poke out the card stock. www.embroiderylibraryprojects.com/ has a few great free on-line videos on this subject as does www.artisticthreadworks.com on their newest products. This video even suggest how to add more color to your greeting cards.
Linda B. gave a great demo on Tube Quilting - the cutting of squares within a tube for your exact piecing. This technique was on a blog at http://missouriquiltco.com/shop/. I could not find the exact blog - but check out the site and you may find it. NOTE: Linda says to try this site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOWSp0mTTqE
There were many great items from the Bring 'n' Brag segment. Margaret brought in her, more than beautiful, 12 Days of Christmas squares that she has completed and would like suggestions on what to do with these squares other than a quilt or wall hanging. Do you have a suggestion for her????? A Tree skirt would be great or maybe a table runner and placemat...Let Margaret know.
Phylinda - Even though she has been out sick, Phylinda has not forgotten about machine embroidery. This past summer she purchased from Eileen Roche the Snap-Wraps. These are wraps that just snap around your machine embroidery stabilizer rolls to identify which stabilizer is which...what a great new product for stabilizers. Linda Lee brought these to the group to show what Phylinda had found.
Linda B. finished her mint green baby quilt - she digitized many elements of the quilt herself and it is just lovely. Many of her digitized items were bunnies, flowers etc., and she even added different textures for the buddy tails and the flower centers - Great Job. This certainly was a hit among all the members. Linda wore a great sweatshirt with the American Flag embroidered on it - it was beautiful.
Mary Beth showed off her fabulous quilt that her friend Paula helped with and encouraged her to finish. I believe this was one of Mary Beth's first quilts and what a great finish she gave to it. Good job MB. Great Team Work!
Linda Lee had a number of items she has embroidered. 2 new Pig Roast aprons for her husband and friends for an upcoming party the guys are having. Monogramed towels for the new spa room, "If The Shoe Fits" fall sweatshirt complete with saying, shoes and even shoe buttons.
Thank you to everyone who brought in their Bring 'n' Brags....
